MINIMALISM
Minimalism: Why Living With Less Changed My Life
When most people hear the word "minimalism," they picture an empty house, white walls, and barely any possessions. It can seem unrealistic, especially for busy families juggling work, kids, school activities, and the endless demands of everyday life.
But that's not what minimalism is.
Minimalism isn't about having nothing. It's about intentionally choosing what deserves a place in your home and your life. It's about owning what you use, what you need, and what genuinely adds value, while letting go of the excess that creates clutter, stress, and overwhelm.
For me, minimalism has been life-changing, and it's something I'm incredibly passionate about sharing with others.
What Is Minimalism?
At its core, minimalism is the practice of simplifying your surroundings and reducing the amount of physical and mental clutter in your life.
It doesn't mean getting rid of everything you own. It means being more mindful about what comes into your home and more intentional about what stays.
Minimalism looks different for everyone. A minimalist family of five will look very different from a minimalist single person living alone, and that's perfectly okay.
The goal isn't perfection. The goal is creating a home that supports your lifestyle rather than constantly demanding your attention.
Different Types of Minimalism
One of the biggest misconceptions is that there is only one way to be minimalist.
In reality, there are many different approaches.
Practical Minimalism
Keeping only what you regularly use and need while creating functional systems that make everyday life easier.
Family Minimalism
Reducing excess toys, clothing, household items, and visual clutter while still maintaining a comfortable family home.
Intentional Minimalism
Being mindful about purchases and only bringing items into your home that serve a purpose or bring genuine value.
Aesthetic Minimalism
The style many people think of first—simple, clean spaces with minimal decor and a neutral colour palette.
You don't need to fit into any category perfectly. Most people naturally combine elements from several approaches.
Why So Many Women Feel Overwhelmed At Home
As women, we often carry the invisible mental load of managing the household.
We know where everything is.
We organise the cupboards.
We sort the laundry.
We manage the toys, the paperwork, the groceries, the wardrobes, and all the little things that seem to multiply overnight.
The more stuff we own, the more there is to manage.
More things need cleaning.
More things need storing.
More things need organising.
More things compete for our attention.
It's exhausting.
Many women think they need better organising systems when often the real solution is simply having less to manage.
How Minimalism Can Benefit Your Family
When you reduce the excess, you create room for what matters most.
Some of the benefits I see time and time again include:
• Faster cleaning and tidying
• Less visual clutter
• Reduced stress and overwhelm
• More functional storage spaces
• Easier household routines
• Less money spent on unnecessary purchases
• More time for family and hobbies
• A calmer home environment
Many families are surprised by how much easier everyday life becomes when there are fewer possessions competing for space and attention.
My Personal Experience
I personally live a very minimalist lifestyle, and I can honestly say my home is no longer the bane of my existence.
Like many women, I used to feel like I was endlessly tidying, cleaning, reorganising, and trying to stay on top of everything. No matter how much effort I put in, it felt like the house was always demanding something from me.
As a mum of twins, I know all about the juggle. Between motherhood, running a business, managing a career, keeping a household functioning, and somehow trying to find a little time for myself, life can feel incredibly full.
For a long time, I felt like I was constantly trying to stay afloat.
Over time, I started changing the way I purchased items and became far more intentional about what entered my home.
Before buying something, I ask myself:
Do I genuinely need it?
Do I already own something similar?
Where will it live?
Will it add value to my life long-term?
Those small habit changes completely transformed my home.
Today, cleaning is quicker.
Tidying takes minutes instead of hours.
Everything has a place.
My home feels calmer, lighter, and significantly easier to manage.
That's not because my house is perfect. It's because there is simply less to maintain.
Instead of constantly managing my possessions, I can spend more time with my family, focus on my work, and enjoy the things that truly matter.
Why I'm So Passionate About Minimalism
The reason I'm so passionate about this way of living is simple—I know how overwhelming life can feel when your home is working against you.
I know what it's like to open a cupboard that's overflowing.
I know what it's like to spend your weekends catching up on housework.
I know what it's like to constantly feel behind.
That's why I started I Tidy Homes.
Not because I believe everyone should own less for the sake of owning less, but because I've experienced first-hand how powerful it can be when your home becomes easier to manage.
I genuinely want to help other women who feel overwhelmed, stretched thin, and exhausted from constantly trying to keep up.
Because I've been there too.

Minimalism Is About Freedom
The most important thing I've learned is that minimalism isn't about deprivation.
It's not about living in an empty house.
It's not about throwing everything away.
It's about freedom.
Freedom from overflowing cupboards.
Freedom from constant tidying.
Freedom from feeling overwhelmed by your environment.
Freedom to spend less time managing your possessions and more time enjoying your life.
You don't need a picture-perfect home.
You don't need to get rid of everything you own.
You simply need a home that supports your lifestyle and gives you room to breathe.
